On November 5, 1966, President Lyndon Baines Johnson signed Public Law 89-761, the bill that established Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, a unit of the National Park Service.

On February 15, 2019, Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore was re-classified Indiana Dunes National Park.
