Indiana Dunes Birding Festival

Over 180 activities and programs spread across this 5-Day event. Program start times vary!

Birding in the Indiana Dunes is the best the state has to offer. With its rich biodiversity, varying habitats and miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, the Indiana Dunes is a hotspot for migrant birds. Come and appreciate this abundance of migratory birds in the Indiana Dunes as the festival offers countless walks, hikes, talks, and programs put on by the Indiana Audubon Society. These programs have a fee and must be registered for in advance.

Two opportunities to view the Solar Eclipse!

Join Indiana Dunes National Park Interpretive staff at the West Beach Visitor Contact Station from 10:00am to 4:00pm to enjoy this astronomical event. Please come prepared with your own Eclipse Safety Glasses as only a Limited quantity will be available. There will be a special Jr. Ranger booklet at the event for the eclipse.

Plan ahead and get a pair of Eclipse Safety Glasses at the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center for a small donation to the FRIENDS of Indiana Dunes. While supplies lasts!

At the Indiana Dunes State Park from 11:30am to 3:00pm, enjoy this opportunity to see an ALMOST (96%) total solar eclipse on the beach. Volunteers, FRIENDS’ members and naturalists will be setup in tents on the east side of our Beach Pavilion selling stellar snacks, answering questions and guiding you through safe viewing of this amazing phenomenon.

FRIENDS of Indiana Dunes will be offering an “Eclipse Themed” Snack Booth. Your donation will support future special events at Indiana Dunes State Park.

Enjoy a sweet taste of spring during the 48th annual Maple Sugar Time Festival. Take a self-guided tour of the sugaring operation at the historic Chellberg Farm which will be bustling with maple sugaring activities. Learn how Miami and Potawatomi Tribes first boiled maple sap into sugar and how early settlers used large iron kettles to make syrup. While walking along the maple trail you will pass by the sugar shack where sap is still boiled down the way the Chellberg family did it back in the 1930s. You can even learn how to make maple syrup at home as well as how modern maple sugar farmers use advanced technology to make syrup today. Kids can learn how to tap a tree at the Maple Fun Zone and meet some of the farm animals. Before heading home, stop by the farmhouse to purchase Indiana-produced maple syrup.
